# How to Get a Stock Price Alert by Email

*Updated September 6, 2026*

There are a few ways to get a stock price alert by email: a price alert in your broker's app, a watchlist on Google Finance or Yahoo Finance, a spreadsheet and a scheduled script, or one sentence handed to MailMeWhen, which needs no account or app.

You don't need to watch a stock all day. You need two things: where it closed, and whether it crossed the number you care about. Everything else is noise a chart makes.

## Ways to get a stock price alert by email

1. Broker apps: they have price alerts, and they're the right tool if you already live in the app. They push to one phone, they're tied to that account, and setting one up means finding the ticker, the alert menu and the right condition.
2. Google Finance and Yahoo Finance: both offer watchlists and alerts too, spread across their own apps and emails, with news, recommendations and 'similar stocks' folded in.
3. A spreadsheet and a script: a stock function plus a scheduled script can email a price every day. Satisfying to build if you like that sort of thing.

## A stock price alert in one sentence

With MailMeWhen you write the company and the rule as you'd say it: 'every evening, Apple's closing price and the change from yesterday', or 'tell me the day Tesla falls below 200'. We watch it and write to you — daily, or only when your line is crossed.

The first 7 days are free with no payment details; after that it's $5/month for that one thing, and it stops by itself if you don't subscribe. One reply stops it any time.

## Good to know about stock price alerts

Name the exchange if the company name is ambiguous, and give a direction and a number for alerts: 'below 200' and 'above 250' are unambiguous, 'when it moves a lot' isn't.

This is information, not advice: we tell you what the price did, not what to do about it.

## Try it — hand us this sentence:

> Every evening after the market closes, email me Apple's closing price and how it changed from the day before. Tell me right away if it falls below 200.

## Common questions

**Can I get the closing price every evening instead of an alert?**

Yes, and you can have both. 'Every evening, the closing price and the change from yesterday' comes daily after the close; 'tell me the day it falls below 200' stays silent until it happens. Write one rule or both in the same sentence. Either way the first letter arrives within 24 hours and confirms what is being watched.

**Does it work for any stock or exchange?**

Name the company and, if the name is ambiguous, the exchange — that's usually all it takes. A real person reads every request first, and if something can't be watched, the first letter says so honestly. Anything that needs a login to your brokerage account can't be done.

**Is this investment advice?**

No. The letter reports what the price did — where it closed, how much it moved, whether it crossed your line — not what to do about it. What you do with the information is yours to decide.
