How to Get a Word of the Day by Email, in Any Language

One word a day is a small habit that adds up: a few hundred words a year, learned in the inbox you open anyway. Dictionaries have offered this for decades in English; for other languages, and for your level, the choice thins out fast.
Here are the ways to get one, and how to make it actually fit you.
The do-it-yourself options
Dictionary newsletters (Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, WordReference and others) send a daily word. The word is chosen for everyone, not for you — often rare, occasionally useful, rarely something you'll say this week.
Language apps have daily words too, wrapped in streaks, badges and reminders to open the app. If you want the word and not the game, that's a lot of wrapping.
Making your own list from a textbook works — until you have to be the one who remembers to look at it.
The one-sentence way
